Proof of Young's inequality

This proof leverages properties of convex functions and HΓΆlder conjugates. I like the proof because it is small, and reasonable.

Define 𝑓(𝑑)=π‘‘π‘ž/π‘ž, a convex function on the interval [0,∞).

One characterization of convex functions is that they are everywhere above their tangent lines. For our convex function 𝑓(𝑑), this means that for any 𝑏,𝑐β‰₯0,

𝑓(𝑏)β‰₯𝑓(𝑐)+𝑓′(𝑐)(π‘βˆ’π‘).

Let 𝑝 and π‘ž be HΓΆlder conjugates (i.e.Β 1/𝑝+1/π‘ž=1 and 𝑝,π‘ž>1).

Now let 𝑐=π‘Žπ‘βˆ’1.

π‘π‘žπ‘žβ‰₯π‘Ž(π‘βˆ’1)π‘žπ‘ž+π‘Ž(π‘βˆ’1)(π‘žβˆ’1)(π‘βˆ’π‘Žπ‘βˆ’1)=π‘Žπ‘π‘ž+π‘Ž(π‘βˆ’π‘Žπ‘βˆ’1)=π‘Žπ‘π‘ž+π‘Žπ‘βˆ’π‘Žπ‘=(1βˆ’π‘ž)π‘Žπ‘π‘ž+π‘Žπ‘=βˆ’π‘Žπ‘π‘+π‘Žπ‘.

The inequality follows by rearrangement. The jumps between the lines are made by recognizing HΓΆlder conjugate identities. The jump from the first line to the second line follows after recognizing (π‘βˆ’1)π‘ž=𝑝 and (π‘βˆ’1)(π‘žβˆ’1)=1. The jump from the second line to the third line follows after seeing (1βˆ’π‘ž)/π‘ž=βˆ’1/𝑝. This fits in my head!
